Smartphone fire scenario

Introduction

Personal Electronic Devices (PED’S) such as laptop’s, smartphones etc. are equipped with rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. These batteries can overheat (thermal runaway) as a result of charging or after they are cracked in between the seats. They can cause heavy smoke, fire, fumes and even explosions.

Objective

The objective is to provide the cabin crew with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to ensure that they deal efficiently with lithium-ion battery fires.

Preparation

Required for this training exercise are:

  • 2 filled fire extinguishers
  • a water can filled with water
  • 2 pieces of Protective Breathing Equipment (PBE)
  • 2 pair of gloves

Attention points

  • Check decision making on the use of PBE’s
  • Check if smartphone is extinguished well
  • Check if Buddy is standby with water-filled can
  • Check if smartphone is cooled down
  • Check if smartphone is removed (only when safe!) and stowed in a containment device
